Picture the scene, it's June 2007, in a rain drenched South London a meeting takes place between Lalit Modi, Vice-President of the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) and Andrew Wildblood of the International Management Group (IMG). In less than a year crickets glitzy, showbusiness tournament the IPL, Lalit Modi's brainchild, is up and running.
Expectation for the tournament had been building and when the player auction featuring bids from some of the richest and most prominent figures in India the media went wild. Fees way in excess of $1 million dollars on single players was the dawn of a new era for cricket a million miles away from the games traditional roots. After an opening ceremony closer to a superbowl that a test match the time for hype was over as the cricket began.
The cricket itself didn't disappoint and Shane Warne's Rajashtan Royals eventually defeated the Chennai Super Kings by 3 wickets in the final to be crowned the inaugural champions despite having been viewed by some prior to the tournament as potentially the weakest team. Each of their players took home cheque for $1.2 Million as many millions watched on TV worldwide.
The second season of the IPL has a rocky start when concerns over potential player safety led the tournament overseas to South Africa. Englands Kevin Pieterson and Andrew Flintoff broke the money record books both commanding $1.55 million whilst the tournaments real winners were player of the tournament Adam Gilchrist and his Deccan Chargers whom he led to the title.
The worlds most exciting cricket tournament returns home to India in March 2010 and with Bollywood stars and Indias biggest names on the sidelines and crickets hottest talent playing it's quickest most exciting version it's sure to be another massive hit. The bookies have the Delhi Daredevils as the favourites but only time will tell who emerges victorious.
